The Seiko buying guide: which collection is right for you?

Seiko is not one ladder from cheap to expensive. It is a group of collections built for different purposes, and understanding those purposes prevents an attractive dial from becoming the wrong watch.

Seiko 5 Sports: start here for mechanical value

Seiko 5 Sports is the accessible automatic entry point. Current UK pricing begins around £250, with field, compact, dressier and SKX-inspired shapes. The shared appeal is approachable mechanical ownership, strong variety and a large community of straps and parts.

Most models are everyday sports watches rather than professional dive watches. Check the crystal, water-resistance rating and bezel function of the exact reference; visual similarity does not guarantee identical capability.

Presage: buy for the dial and dressier character

Presage shifts the emphasis toward dial craft and traditional styling. Cocktail Time models are often the gateway, pairing textured or reflective dials with automatic movements. They can look more expensive than they are, but polished cases and dressier straps may show wear differently from a tool watch.

Choose Presage when the pleasure is in looking at the dial. If strong lume, bezel timing or water use matters more, move to Prospex.

Prospex: match the specification to the activity

Prospex covers diving, field and other purpose-led watches across solar, automatic and higher-end movements. The range is broad enough that the collection name alone tells you little about fit. Compare diameter, lug-to-lug, thickness and ISO dive compliance on the exact model.

A larger Prospex diver can be wonderfully stable on a rubber strap yet top-heavy on a small wrist. Try it on and consider the cost of a future pressure test if it will actually be used in water.

Astron—and when quartz is the premium answer

Astron uses solar and GPS-connected timekeeping to prioritise accuracy and travel convenience. It is technologically ambitious rather than a cheaper substitute for mechanical watchmaking. The best choice for a frequent traveller may be the watch that corrects itself, not the one that displays the most traditional movement.

Across every collection, record the reference number before comparing prices. Seiko names and nicknames are inconsistent between retailers, while apparently similar models can differ in movement, crystal and dimensions.
