Quartz wins on accuracy and convenience
A conventional quartz watch uses a battery and an electronically regulated quartz oscillator. It is generally more accurate, more resistant to being left unworn and less expensive to maintain than a mechanical equivalent. Solar quartz can reduce routine battery changes further.
High-end quartz shows that the technology is not inherently disposable. Grand Seiko's 9F62-powered SBGX263 is specified to ±10 seconds per year and pairs that precision with a serviceable movement and carefully finished case.
Mechanical wins on visible engineering and ritual
A mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring and releases it through a regulating organ and gear train. An automatic movement adds a rotor that winds the spring from wrist motion. The seconds hand advances in several small steps each second, creating the familiar sweep.
That miniature machine is the appeal, but it brings positional variation, magnetism, lubrication and eventual servicing into ownership. A watch gaining several seconds each day can be operating perfectly within its specification.
The real cost difference arrives later
A quartz battery replacement and water-resistance check can be modest; a complete mechanical service involves dismantling, cleaning, lubrication, reassembly and testing. Complications such as chronographs increase the work. Manufacturer prices can reach hundreds of pounds before optional external parts.
That does not make mechanical irrational. It means the service cost should be treated as part of the purchase price, especially when buying an older watch with an unknown history.
Choose by behaviour, not hierarchy
Choose quartz if you want grab-and-go accuracy, rotate between several watches or dislike resetting the time. Choose mechanical if winding, movement design and small variations feel like part of the relationship rather than defects.
For many collections, the most rational answer is both: a dependable quartz watch for travel or hard use and a mechanical watch for the days when the machine itself is part of the point.
